Responsible for assessing and underwriting insurance risks in line with company guidelines, delegated authority, and risk appetite, while supporting profitable portfolio growth and delivering efficient, high-quality service.

Are you someone with?

  • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Insurance, Business, Commerce, Finance, Risk Management, or a related discipline.

  • Diploma in General Insurance or equivalent insurance qualification is desirable.

  • Progress toward professional insurance qualifications (such as ANZIIF or CIP) will be an advantage.

  • Minimum 3–5 years' experience in general insurance underwriting or a related insurance role.

  • Experience underwriting commercial and/or personal insurance products.

  • Knowledge of policy documentation and underwriting procedures.

  • Experience working with insurance brokers and clients is desirable.

  • Experience using insurance management systems and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Good understanding of general insurance principles and underwriting practices.

  • Ability to assess and analyse insurance risks.

  • Sound knowledge of policy wordings and insurance contracts.

  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Good organisational and time management abilities.

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within agreed service standards.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and insurance administration systems.



Key Responsibilities


1. Underwriting

  • Assess new business, renewals, endorsements, and policy alterations in accordance with Company underwriting guidelines and delegated authority.

  • Evaluate insurance proposals by analysing risk exposures, claims history, financial information, and other relevant underwriting factors.

  • Determine appropriate terms, conditions, exclusions, deductibles, and premium rates.

  • Refer risks that exceed delegated authority to the Underwriting Manager for approval.

  • Ensure underwriting decisions are documented accurately and supported by appropriate information.


2. Policy Administration

  • Prepare quotations, insurance schedules, certificates, endorsements, and policy documentation.

  • Process new business, renewals, cancellations, and policy amendments within agreed service standards.

  • Ensure all policy records are accurate and maintained within the Company's insurance management system.

  • Maintain complete underwriting files and supporting documentation.


3. Customer & Broker Service

  • Provide professional and timely responses to enquiries from brokers, agents, clients, and internal stakeholders.

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with brokers and customers.

  • Provide technical advice on policy coverage, underwriting requirements, and documentation.

  • Assist in resolving underwriting-related enquiries and service issues.


4. Risk Assessment & Portfolio Management

  • Monitor individual risks to ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines.

  • Identify unusual or emerging risks and escalate where appropriate.

  • Assist in maintaining a balanced and profitable underwriting portfolio.

  • Support portfolio reviews and risk improvement initiatives.


5. Reinsurance Support

  • Prepare underwriting information required for facultative reinsurance placements.

  • Liaise with the Underwriting Manager regarding risks requiring reinsurance approval.

  • Ensure risks are underwritten within treaty arrangements and Company authority limits.


6. Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure all underwriting activities comply with Company policies, underwriting manuals, regulatory requirements, and applicable legislation.

  • Maintain confidentiality of customer information and commercial data.

  • Participate in internal audits and compliance reviews as required.

  • Ensure complete and accurate underwriting documentation is maintained.


7. Reporting & Administration

  • Prepare underwriting reports and statistical information as required.

  • Monitor outstanding quotations, renewals, and pending documentation.

  • Assist in maintaining underwriting registers and records.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of underwriting processes and procedures.


8. Teamwork & Professional Development

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Underwriting, Claims, Finance, and Business Development.

  • Share technical knowledge and support junior team members where appropriate.

  • Participate in training programs to enhance underwriting knowledge and technical skills.

  • Keep up to date with insurance products, market developments, and industry regulations.
